Beyond Treatment: Supporting the Nervous System During Breast Cancer Recovery

Breast cancer recovery

A cancer diagnosis affects much more than physical health. During treatment and throughout breast cancer recovery, many people experience fatigue, changes in sleep, anxiety, stress, or difficulty concentrating.

There are appointments, tests, treatments, medications and decisions to navigate. There may be days when your focus is simply getting through the next step.

And even when treatment ends, the experience doesn't necessarily end there.

Many breast cancer survivors continue to experience fatigue, difficulty sleeping, stress, anxiety, or changes in concentration and memory. Sometimes referred to as "chemo brain" or cancer-related cognitive impairment, these changes can affect everyday life long after treatment has finished.

This is where caring for the whole person becomes so important.

The Nervous System Matters, Too

When the body goes through a major physical or emotional experience, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of alertness.

You may find that it's difficult to truly relax. Your sleep may not feel restorative. Your thoughts may feel scattered. Or you may simply feel like your body hasn't quite learned that it is safe to slow down again.

Supporting nervous system regulation can be one part of a broader integrative approach to cancer care and survivorship.

At Pellegrino Healing Center, we offer a variety of therapies designed to support the body and mind throughout different stages of the healing journey. One of these is IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback.

What Is IASIS Neurofeedback?

IASIS MicroCurrent Neurofeedback being performed on a patient

IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback is a non-invasive technology designed to support relaxation and nervous system regulation. Unlike traditional neurofeedback, which generally requires a person to actively interact with a computer program, IASIS is a passive process. The patient simply sits comfortably while the practitioner administers the treatment.

The goal is not to treat cancer itself. Rather, IASIS may be used as a complementary therapy to support the nervous system and overall well-being.

For someone who has been through the physical and emotional demands of cancer treatment, having an opportunity to slow down and support relaxation can be meaningful.

Supporting the Mind During Breast Cancer Recovery

Two profiles showing mental confusion versus clarity

Research into neurofeedback for people with cancer and cancer survivors is still developing, but early studies have explored its potential role in areas including fatigue, sleep, psychological symptoms and cognitive difficulties.

One small study specifically involving breast cancer survivors found that participants experienced improvements in perceived cognitive difficulties, fatigue, sleep and psychological symptoms following a course of neurofeedback. Other research has also explored neurofeedback as a potential supportive approach for cognitive and emotional changes that can persist following cancer treatment.

These findings are encouraging, but more research is needed to understand which types of neurofeedback, protocols and treatment approaches are most helpful for cancer patients and survivors.

That's why we view IASIS as complementary support, not a replacement for your oncology care or other medical treatment.

You Don't Have to Wait Until Treatment Is Over

For someone currently going through breast cancer treatment, the experience can be physically and emotionally demanding.

Your needs may change from week to week. What feels supportive one day may not feel right the next.

If you're currently receiving chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other cancer treatment and are interested in exploring complementary therapies, it's important to talk with your oncology team before beginning something new. Your medical team knows your individual treatment plan and can help determine what is appropriate for you.

For those who have completed treatment, integrative therapies can also become part of the process of rebuilding your energy, restoring routines and finding your way back to yourself.

More Ways to Support Your Healing

IASIS neurofeedback is just one of the supportive therapies available at Pellegrino Healing Center. Depending on your needs, acupuncture, massage therapy, manual lymphatic drainage, herbal medicine, and other integrative services may also be part of your personal approach to feeling more supported, grounded, and connected to your body.

There is no one-size-fits-all path after a cancer diagnosis or treatment. Our practitioners work with you to understand where you are in your journey and explore supportive therapies that complement your overall care.

Healing Is More Than Treating the Disease

Cancer care doesn't have to be limited to what happens in the treatment room. There is also the experience of living through it.

Supporting sleep. Managing stress. Caring for your emotional well-being. Paying attention to fatigue. Finding ways to reconnect with your body. Creating space to simply breathe.

These things matter.

At Pellegrino Healing Center & Integrative Cancer Center, we take a whole-person approach to care, supporting individuals throughout their cancer journey and beyond. IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback is one of the complementary therapies we offer as part of that care.

If you're currently undergoing treatment or are a breast cancer survivor interested in learning more about IASIS Micro Current Neurofeedback, we encourage you to speak with your oncology team and Tammy, our Therapy & Healing Technician, to determine whether it may be an appropriate addition to your care.
